Stories from the Shop

Yesterday was a day I’ll never forget.

Many years ago, this iconic “The Bull Pen” sign hung proudly at the famous Trails Inn in Tumwater, right above the mechanical bull. When the Trails Inn closed, the sign was gifted to my grandparents, who proudly displayed it in their barbershop for the remainder of their business.

After my grandparents retired and closed their shop, the sign found a new home with one of their longtime, loyal clients.

Yesterday, that same client walked into my barbershop for a haircut—but he wasn’t just there for a haircut. He had secretly arranged for my grandparents to come to the shop, and together they surprised me by presenting me with this incredible piece of history.

To say I was speechless is an understatement.

This isn’t just an old sign. It’s a symbol of Tumwater history, my family’s barbering legacy, and the relationships that span generations. The fact that a client treasured it all these years and chose to return it to our family means more than words can express.

Soon, this sign will hang proudly in Bullpen Barbershop, where its story will continue for future generations to enjoy.

To everyone who has supported my family through five generations of barbering—thank you. Moments like this remind me that a barbershop is about so much more than haircuts. It’s about community, friendships, memories, and carrying on traditions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made yesterday so special. This is something I’ll cherish forever. ❤️🐂✂️
